Sheff Wed Deals with a 'Significant Problem', Says New Football Authority

'We will play a key role in football's future' - newly appointed regulator the new chairman

Sheffield Wednesday's persistent issues constitute a "serious issue" and the football regulator is aiming to acquire authority to investigate clubs in similar circumstances, its new chair the official has announced.

In a wide-ranging interview, the regulator, who was appointed on Monday, voiced concern towards Wednesday's fanbase.

The chairman convened with four fan organizations connected to the Championship side recently.

The team have been struggling on and off the field in 2025, with the club missing wage payments on several different times, including in September.

"Obviously the club has become a major concern for the league and a major challenge for the sport," the regulator explained.

"Wednesday stands as one of the iconic names for English football and recently we have met Sheffield Wednesday supporters' groups.

"We are seeking authority... which will enable us to take the club and similar situations submitted for our review if they need to be investigated and addressed."

Monetary Issues and Proprietorship Status

The club's controversial proprietor the Thai businessman suggested earlier this year he would be prepared to relinquish control at Hillsborough, but he has been unable to finalize an agreement with potential new owners.

Missed wage deadlines on time in March and May caused limitations by the league officials in summer, preventing the club from carrying out any recruitment activities for the subsequent signing windows, although that restriction was lifted in late summer.

Authority's Position

The chairman stated: "The position was created for the supporters of Wednesday, Bury or any football club where supporters are loyal to a local institution that has existed throughout their lifetimes in multiple situations.

"I have absolute sympathy for Sheffield Wednesday, as I do for every team that in modern times have encountered failure, or nearly ceased operations, for reasons that have nothing to do with the supporters."

Questioned about whether the authority might compel an chairman to relinquish a club if they are deemed unsuitable, the regulator answered: "Should the inquiry concern 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the response would be once we collect the information and know what's going on, we will."

But the chairman emphasized that forcing owners to sell clubs would be viewed as the ultimate measure and the regulator would prefer to collaborate with owners.

"The last thing what we want to do is commence engagement with an individual club, an particular chairman, without being in a position to cooperate with that chairman to fix the challenges confronting the team and the chairman's encountering," Kogan said.

"But the truth is, when you examine the past of football, over the recent generations there have been particular chairmen, not many, but some who have been irresponsible in the manner they have operated their organizations and finally decline to assume obligation for the future."

'Errors may undo substantial development'

The chairman convened with representatives from 110 clubs to explain the responsibilities of the oversight body this week and stated it constituted a "progressive gathering" with a "high level of engagement" from the National League to the Premier League.

"It's a job that's actually really important, because if errors are made, if the world of football gets it wrong, the remarkable development accomplished could disappear swiftly," the chairman stated.

"And that's what nobody wants in the context of the English game is a substantial accomplishment - we must maintain momentum.

"There's an enormous amount of money entering the sport and has come into football for the past two decades, because certainty is lacking it will persist in entering the game, which is part of the rationale behind I think we have to adopt a precise perspective on challenges and obviously, of the next two or three years."

Premier League Concerns

Elite division representatives objected to the formation of an authority because of apprehensions regarding adverse consequences on the Premier League's sporting equality, but the chairman responded: "I fully support the achievement and development as an economic entity of the elite league.

"Being fully aware of the concern of undermining the division as a high-quality offering of the nation. But simultaneously, if you engage with division representatives after this week's discussion, they would have had a substantial amount of confidence -and, in fact, they have been advising us privately they have a high level of reassurance."

Ideological Links

The chairman continues to confront a "full inquiry" by the public appointments commissioner after he revealed he contributed money to the political party in the past.

The chairman provided financial support for Culture Secretary the politician's campaign, along with that of the current Prime Minister.

"I have fully disclosed my former ideological connection [with Labour], and that political affiliation came to an end the day the official body endorsed my nomination," the regulator explained.

"I am no longer involved in any form of political activity."
