A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
